David
A. Helfand
Prior
to forming Helix Funds in 2003, Mr. Helfand worked at
Equity Office Properties (NYSE:EOP) where he served as Executive
Vice President and Chief Investment Officer. During his tenure at
Equity Office, Mr. Helfand supervised more than $13 billion of
investment activity, including EOP's mergers with Cornerstone
Properties and Spieker Properties. Prior to joining Equity Office in
1998, Mr. Helfand served as President and Chief Executive Officer of
Equity Lifestyle Properties, Inc. (NYSE: ELS). Until recently, Mr.
Helfand has served as a Member of the Board of Directors of ELS. He
has also served as a Managing Director of Equity International
Properties, a private equity fund sponsored by Samuel Zell, focusing
on international real estate investment. Mr. Helfand holds a
master's degree from the University of Chicago Graduate School of
Business and a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University.
Patrick
J. Waite
Prior
to joining Helix Funds, Mr. Waite co-founded
Continental Communities, a privately held company, to acquire, own,
and operate manufactured home communities in the Northeast, Midwest
and Southwest regions of the U.S. At Continental, Mr. Waite
managed the acquisition program including the purchase of 25
properties with approximately 6,000 sites. Immediately prior
to Continental, Mr. Waite worked with Mr. Helfand as Director of
Acquisitions for Manufactured Home Communities, Inc. (MHC) and
directly managed or participated in the acquisition of communities
valued at more than $300 million. Mr. Waite holds a
Bachelor’s degree of Urban Land Economics and a Master of Science
degree in Real Estate Finance both from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison.
Justin
B. Smollar
Prior
to joining Helix Funds, Mr. Smollar worked at Equity
Office Properties, where he served as Manager of Investments. While
at Equity Office, Mr. Smollar participated in more than $7 billion
of investment activity that included EOP's merger with Spieker
Properties. In addition, Mr. Smollar participated in more than $300
million of single-asset/small portfolio acquisitions and
dispositions. In the years immediately prior to joining Equity
Office, Mr. Smollar served as Portfolio Manager at Delray Capital
Corporation, an investment company specializing in real estate
investment opportunities, derivative trading strategies and venture
capital investments. Mr. Smollar holds a Master of Science degree
from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in
Business Administration from Tulane University.
Orrin
S. Shifrin
Prior
to joining Helix Funds, Mr. Shifrin was a Principal at
Terrapin Properties, LLC, a privately-held real estate investment
and development company, where his role involved general counsel
duties, business development and operations. While at
Terrapin, Mr. Shifrin was involved in over $200 million of
residential and commercial real estate-related transactions.
Prior to Terrapin, Mr. Shifrin was a Partner at the law firm of
Katten Muchin Zavis Rosenman, where he worked for over 10 years.
Mr. Shifrin received his Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the
University of Illinois in 1989, where he graduated with highest
honors and is a bronze tablet honoree. He received his Juris
Doctor degree from Northwestern University in 1992.
William
H. Griffiths
Prior to joining Helix Funds, Mr. Griffiths worked at
Equity Office Properties, where he served as Director of Business
Development. While at Equity Office, Mr. Griffiths
participated in more than $12 billion of investment activity that
included Equity Office’s mergers with Cornerstone and Spieker, as
well as various preferred stock investments in service companies.
In addition, Mr. Griffiths was responsible for the disposition of a
$450 million portfolio of stand-alone parking garages. Prior
to joining Equity office in 1998, Mr. Griffiths was an Associate in
the Real Estate Investment Banking group at J.P. Morgan in New York,
where he was involved in a wide variety of M&A, equity and debt
financing, and asset sale assignments. Mr. Griffiths holds
Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences
and Economics from Northwestern University and a Master’s degree
from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
David S. Weinberg
Prior to joining Helix Funds, Mr. Weinberg worked at
Equity Office Properties, where he served as Vice President
of Investments and Asset Management. While at EOP, Mr. Weinberg
participated in more than $6 billion of investment activity and
oversaw EOP’s 16 million square foot office portfolio in Southern
California. In the years immediately prior to joining EOP,
Mr. Weinberg served as Vice President of Acquisitions at LaSalle
Investment Management, where he was responsible for acquiring office
and industrial buildings in most of the major markets west of the
Mississippi. While at LaSalle, Mr. Weinberg closed 16 acquisitions
totaling over $360 million. Prior to LaSalle, Mr. Weinberg was at
the law firm of Sidley & Austin, where he worked for 4 years on
corporate and securities matters, and he also spent one year as a
Judicial Clerk for the United States Sixth Circuit Court of
Appeals. Mr. Weinberg received his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
from the University of Illinois in 1990, where he graduated with
highest honors and is a bronze tablet honoree. He received his
Juris Doctor degree from Northwestern University in 1993, where he
was a member of the Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif.
Marc Lofman
Prior to joining Helix Funds, Mr. Lofman was the Managing
member of State Street Capital Partners, an opportunistic real
estate investment firm where he oversaw acquisitions, asset
management, sales and marketing. Mr. Lofman also held senior
positions at Sun Communities (NYSE: SUI) and CWS Capital Partners
(an affiliate of Security Capital Group), where he participated in
the acquisition and management of over 40 manufactured home
communities valued in excess of $400 million. Mr. Lofman received a
Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and received
a J.D. and M.B.A. from Boston University.
Allen Samuel
Prior to joining Helix Funds, Mr. Samuel worked at Equity
Office Properties (EOP) as Market Controller. In this role he
oversaw GAAP based reporting, budgeting and forecasting efforts for
several regions of the publicly traded company. Prior to joining
EOP in 1998, Mr. Samuel served as a Financial Analyst at
Commonwealth Realty Advisors where he provided various financial
reporting and investment return analyses to institutional clients.
Mr. Samuel is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Bachelor’s
degree in Accounting from the University of Iowa and an MBA in
Finance and International Business from DePaul University.
